California Work Trip

I was able to go on a work trip this past week for 4 days. We went to San Francisco, LA, and San Diego. We visited 4 hospitals to learn about their NICUs. I got to travel with coworker and doctors & nurses from Seattle Children's Hospital. It was a really great experience and fabulous opportunity. The company was fun and I loved soaking up California's sunshine. We stopped in La Jolla a cute coastal town for a stupendous dinner one night. The sun was setting at the beach and lots of seals were out napping and wandering around.

Work has been insane lately and I've had a ton on my plate, hence the lack of blog posts.  But the work busyness has also given me a lot of hope that I'm getting more responsibility and working towards the role I want at work. Cueing a bunch up though so be ready I'm about to rapid fire update you on our lives very soon!

Chihuly Boat Tour

A woman that works with me's husband (following me?) sometimes blows glass for Chihuly. Don't know him, check out this first: Chihuly Glass Museum. The interiors group at our office got to have a personal tour of his boathouse where all their glass is blown. A group of men were blowing some beautiful pieces for a chandelier while we were there. The man sitting on the "throne" is the lead colorist and shapes the actual pieces that are fired an brought to him. Mesmerizing process.

But that's just the workshop area. The rest of the boathouse is full of small test versions of installations in the museum and apparently he's a very avid collector of everything. The bathroom walls were lined with first edition children's books and an early edition VW bus and Aston Martin and other fancy cars we wandered through. He collected things that inspired him, the lines of things, the colors, the textures. Sometimes valuable sometimes not worth anything to anyone else.

His old studio table is a solid piece of wood 88 ft long that looks over the water and boasts his colorful chandeliers where clients can see how the colored glass look in regular lighting situations. The table is beautiful but not precious, there are nicks covering it and apparently children fill the table every year to decorate gingerbread.

Chihuly used to also live in the boathouse so there's a beautiful bedroom with a mesmerizing tub that sinks into the floor and the tub is plexiglass with giant gems of colored glass lying beneath encapsulating you. He started out as an interior designer so every detail was designed by him and considered by him, sometimes he apparently comes in and just rearranges things. So love him and his style or not it was still fun to walk through a space like this.

We ended the tour by checking out his lap pool, in the boathouse!, that he still swims in everyday. The bottom of the pool has a display of blown glass pieces too, of course.

It was fun to run out of the office for a bit and hang out in artist's studio space. Inspiring and very hard to go back to my desk knowing my task for that day was wall protection :)

Post-Holiday Office Party

This year's post-holiday party was another hit. Sadly the Seahawk's playoff game was also on so many were distracted by that for awhile, but after that it kicked up. Photo booth, glowing ZGF, silly old man band that can rock a tune, giant dance party, pretty venue, open bar, and the opportunity to wear a red cocktail dress. Also the night ended at a place called Hooligans where we infiltrated a Seahawks jersey wearing bar in droves of bowties and dresses to throw peanut shells on the floor and play big buck hunter - wouldn't be a ZGF office party if it didn't end that way!

Biggest Bonfire

To kick off our United Way fundraising week at work we have a big bonfire at one of our co-worker's farms. He has a big horse, 2 baby horses, a goat, 2 dogs, and a kitty. Everyone else filled the place in with their dogs and kids and we had a big chili cookoff with tons of cornbread, fried chicken, and cookies to fill in.

We lucked out and the weather was on our side and we had a really great time! The lighting of the big bonfire was my favorite because I truly love groups of people ganged about a bonfire, life feels right!

Plus I got to wear overalls and rubber boots at the same time! Yeah!

A little ladies night

A friend and coworker Camila was nice enough to have a bunch of girls from work over to her apartment the other evening. We had a little ladies night complete with mimosas and punch with champagne. She decked her awesome apartment out with tables of tiered bruschetta, strawberries, and dips. I brought a few galettes full of Italian plums from a coworker's plum tree and we had ourselves a great time.

The weather warmed up at night and we all hung out on the little balcony, testing it's weight limit. We gossiped a little, and mostly just had a lovely summer evening. It's great to be reminded the people you work with are real people, and fabulous funny beautiful people at that!
